Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
Conditions Treated
Most cases of back pain can be effectively managed without the need for surgery. However, there are situations where spine surgery may be recommended if alternative treatments like medication or physical therapy have not provided relief. It’s important to note that spine surgery may not be suitable for all back problems, but it can be beneficial for certain conditions such as:
- Herniated discs
- Spinal stenosis
- Spinal deformities like scoliosis
- Fractured vertebrae
- Removal of spinal tumors
Procedure Overview
Minimally invasive spine surgery can be employed for various types of spine surgeries, offering patients a more effective and efficient surgical option. Dr. Avramis performs several types of minimally invasive procedures, including discectomy or laminectomy. The details of each procedure will vary depending on the specific surgery and the part of the spine being treated, but will generally involve:
- The surgeon will start with a small incision. Subsequently, a device known as a tubular retractor is introduced. This tube-like instrument plays a crucial role in creating a tunnel leading to the targeted area of the spine.
- The tubular retractor facilitates the formation of a precise tunnel towards the affected region of the spine. This approach minimizes the disruption to surrounding tissues and reduces the overall invasiveness of the procedure.
- Navigating through the tunnel created by the tubular retractor, the surgeon gains access to the spine using specialized small tools. This careful and targeted access ensures that only the necessary structures are interacted with during the procedure.
Recovery
Minimally invasive spine surgery is renowned for its quicker recovery compared to traditional approaches. This results in shorter hospital stays, reduced pain, and a faster return to normal activities. Some types of minimally invasive surgery can be done as outpatient procedures, which means patients can go home the same day. Other procedures may require one to two nights in the hospital. The surgeon will provide additional instructions regarding physical activity restrictions for the initial phase of recovery. Physical therapy is typically also part of the treatment plan to strengthen the muscles around the spine and assist in recovery. Recovery time will vary depending on the type of surgery performed and the patient’s overall health, but with minimally invasive spine surgery, patients may be able to return to normal activities in as little as a few weeks.
