Disc Replacement Surgery

Disc replacement surgery is done to address certain conditions affecting the spinal discs that have not responded to non-surgical treatment, including:

  • Degenerative disc disease As we age, and discs lose their hydration and height, they can contribute to pain, reduced flexibility, and instability. Removing the damaged disc and replacing it with an artificial disc restores proper space between the vertebrae, maintains spinal alignment, and alleviates associated symptoms.
  • Herniated disc A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc protrudes through the tough outer layer, putting pressure on nearby nerves. Procedure Overview

This inpatient procedure is performed under general anesthesia to ensure that the patient remains unconscious and pain-free throughout the surgery. The incision is typically made in the front or side of the neck or the front of the abdomen. The choice of the incision depends on the location of the affected disc. The damaged disc is carefully removed and the collapsed space between vertebrae is restored. Following this, the artificial disc is implanted. The surgeon will then close the incision with sutures or staples, ensuring minimal scarring.

Recovery

Following a brief hospital stay, typically two to three days, the initial days following surgery are focused on managing pain, monitoring the surgical site for healing, and ensuring early mobility. Patients may be encouraged to walk with assistance and gradually increase their activity levels. In some cases, a brace may be recommended to provide stability to the spine at this stage as well, but the use and duration of bracing will depend on the surgeon’s preferences and the specifics of the procedure. Physical therapy is a key component of recovery and typically begins soon after surgery.

The timeline for returning to normal activities varies, but most patients can resume light activities within a few weeks. Full recovery may take several months. Patients are usually advised to avoid heavy lifting, bending, or twisting during the early stages of recovery. Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are crucial for monitoring the progress of healing, addressing any concerns, and adjusting the postoperative plan as needed.
